Information about ICE SAILING CLASSES
For Icesailing there are different classes. For now we have added some know classes, but mamby we miss one so let us know when you need an extra class.
The rankings are based on the following classes.
All winter sailing with „free standing rig“ are divided in there groups according Winter Ice Snow Sailing Association (WISSA) classification:
1) Sled Class :
This is any sled powered by a windsurfing rig, where the rider is standing. This is where we are. This is winter windsurfing. There goes Snowfer and Windski and Hiberna hi-boards (or freeskate in US and Canada) and SWIFT windboard and all constructions on ski sledges with windsurfing sail.
2) Hand held Class :
Any wing held directly by hand.
3) Kites Class :
All wings connected by lines. This sport consist to slide on skis or board and to be trackted by a kite.
4) Iceboat - DN
The DN is 12 feet (3.7 m) long, with a 21 inch (53 cm) wide cockpit and an 8 foot (2.4 m) wide runner plank. The 16 foot (4.9 m) mast supports 60 square feet (6.5 m²) of sail area. The boat weighs 100 lb (45 kg), and is piloted by a single helmeted sailor. The front runner is typically rigged with a steering rod that connects the runner to a tiller that is mounted just aft of the mast base.
The class has a devout following. The IDNIYRA, publishes standards for boat design and allows enthusiasts to assemble for races and to share good ice locations.
5) Iceboat - Zaby
Claude lambelet: "Fascinated by the sport of sailing since I was very young, yachting and ice boating professional since 50 years, this rich experience and so many decades of DN and Nite sailing on most european frozen sites, gave me the idea of ZABY". The iceboat is very light, the fuselage can be loaded on a cartop with the runner plank; mast, headboard tube, sail, boom and runners in the car. Homepage: Zaby iceboat.
6) Iceboat - Flyer
Ice Flyer is a 12 foot by 8 foot "sail behind the pilot" ice boat which uses any off the shelf windsurfing sail. The first prototype of Ice Flyer was built in early 1993 and is basically an adaptation of the larger sail behind the pilot skeeter ice boats. The controls are simple and the boat is well behaved making it a good choice even for a beginner.
The Ice Flyer is easy to car top and the stable dynamics and proportionately higher front runner weight give the boat great maneuverability and an additional level of safety if the wind picks up. Homepage: Ice Flyer

7) Iceboat - Icabella
Isabella iceboats are designed by Bernd Stymer of Sweden. These ice boats utilize off-the-shelf componentry including windsurfer sails and DN iceboat runners. They reach top speeds of 65 MPH. Homepage: Isabella iceboat.
